Let's say that I pay $250/month for my car payment, $125/month for gas, $25/month for insurance, $15/month for taxes and $85/month for maintenance/repairs. That's $500/month operating cost to own a car. Now, let's say that I drive 15,000 miles/year. That's 1,250 miles/month. Divide 500 by 1,250 and you get a cost of $0.40 per mile.
Considering that Zipcar is located in urban locations, most travel will likely be urban. Using 30 mph as an average speed, and $12 per hour as the rate, and dividing 12 by 30, you get a cost of...$0.40 per mile! So if it costs me the same to own a car as it does to use Zipcar, I'm opting for the accessibility, convenience and freedom of my own wheels! Because the advantage of using Zipcar is...ZIP.
